Chapter 10

Cold Summer Morning

The air was crisp as a tiny bit crept through the small crack of their bedroom window. The wild bird’s song woke him up. He hugged the pillow while on his stomach. When he reached over, he didn’t feel Lovely’s warm body that was usually pressed close to his. Mathew fluttered his eyelashes and looked around the bedroom.

He sat straight up and listened to the house. There was no water running, no smell of bacon cooking. The house was completely silent.

“Lovely?” he called.

When she didn’t answer, he figured maybe she couldn’t hear him.

He got out of bed and went over to the window. He lifted it to get a whiff of the fresh morning air. He looked down and saw pearls of dew upon the grass. After gazing upon the yard, he checked the bathroom. Lovely wasn’t there. Mathew walked down the hall and downstairs. There was no sign of her.

“Lovely?”

He frowned and recalled the evening after the Masquerade Ball. They went home, changed out of their attire, and he heated up some chicken and okra gumbo. They ate, made love, and fell asleep while pillow-talking about Fancy. She was worried that she hated her for marrying him. He reassured her that Fancy’s silly jealousy would die down soon. He wasn’t going to pay her any mind, and he told her not to either. Lovely was able to go to sleep with an easy mind. He was uncertain of when she got out of the bed because he was a heavy sleeper.

He went back upstairs to their bedroom and noticed her nightgown was draped carefully over the back of the chair in the corner of the room. Her coin purse was sitting on top of the dresser.

It was seven thirty, and he was going to have to get to work to open up for his first day of business by nine. Maybe she went to the store for something, he thought, but then where would she go without her coin purse? He made up the bed and ran water for a bath.

By the time he bathed, shaved, and got dressed, she still wasn’t back. The Marants didn’t live too far down the road, so he drove to their home to see if maybe she was there. When he got there, Virgil was getting his medical bag ready to leave.

“Good morning, Dr. Marant.”

“Good morning, Mathew. What brings you here this morning? Aren’t you opening up for business today?”

“Yes, today is the day. I’m looking for Lovely. Have you seen her?”

“She’s not here to my knowledge. Check with the Misses. I have to head out. I’m running late. I’ll stop by your office before the day is up.”

“See you later.”

Virgil was out the door.

Mathew walked down the hallway to the kitchen where Rachel was cleaning up breakfast dishes.

He didn’t want to startle her, so he said, “Good morning, Mrs. Marant.”

She smiled when she saw him. “Good morning, son. Did you eat this morning? I’m sure Lovely cooked you something. If she didn’t, I have a few flapjacks here if you like them.
